Cutting grass as short as possible saves time between mowings.

Scalping the lawn stresses grass plants, exposes soil to sun, and gives weeds a competitive advantage.
Grass blades are the plant's solar panels. When you cut them too short — a practice called scalping — the plant can no longer photosynthesize effectively and diverts energy away from root development. Shallow roots make the lawn more vulnerable to drought and disease. Most cool-season grasses (like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue) perform best when kept at 3 to 4 inches; warm-season varieties such as Bermuda and zoysia tolerate shorter cuts but still have a healthy minimum. Thatch is a layer of accumulated dead stems, roots, and rhizomes (horizontal underground stems) that builds up between the soil surface and the living grass above. It's primarily composed of woody plant material that breaks down slowly. Grass clippings, by contrast, are made up mostly of water and soft tissue, and they decompose within days to weeks, releasing nitrogen and other nutrients back into the soil. True lawn health is built from the ground up: soil with good structure and microbial activity, adequate aeration to allow roots to penetrate deeply, and a mowing and watering routine that encourages root growth rather than just blade growth.
